Our Official Verdict

Zero-Fee Self-Custody: Deposit USDC, Spend USD Anywhere

The Avici Platinum is the entry-level self-custodial secured credit card. With Free annual fee and 0% FX markup, it is a cost-effective off-ramp for USDC holders who want sovereignty over their spending. The trade-off is ATM withdrawal fees and no rewards - but for users who value custody above cashback, that is a fair deal.

Avici Platinum Card Review

The Avici Platinum Card is a $10 self-custodial secured Visa Platinum credit card issued by Rain, powered by a USDC loan escrow smart contract across 12 blockchain networks (Ethereum, Polygon, OP Mainnet, Base, Arbitrum, Avalanche, BNB Chain, Monad, Mantle, Abstract, Scroll, Solana), with 0% FX markup, $0 annual fee, $0 transaction fees, $1 + 0.65% ATM fee, Visa Platinum benefits (Bloomberg Linea, Disney+, Skybox 36-month membership, Price/Purchase Protection, Emergency services), ZeroDev smart wallet with biometric passkeys, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and availability in 48 countries (not Europe or UK).

The Only Self-Custodial Secured Credit Card in Crypto

We tested every crypto card in the market, and the Avici Platinum is unique: it is a secured credit card, not a debit card. You deposit USDC into a loan escrow smart contract that you control, and receive equivalent USD credit on a Visa card. Your USDC stays in your smart contract until you spend - then the corresponding amount is liquidated within 1-7 days to settle with Visa.

This is fundamentally different from every other crypto card. Debit cards (MetaMask, ether.fi, Gnosis Pay) pull funds at the moment of purchase. Exchange cards (Crypto.com, Bybit) require depositing into a custodial account. Avici creates a credit line backed by your own USDC in a contract only you control. $10 one-time card issuance, zero annual fee, zero FX markup, and zero transaction fees - plus Visa Platinum network benefits including Bloomberg Linea, Disney+, and Skybox. The trade-off: zero cashback and zero rewards. This is a sovereignty card, not a rewards card.

Card Specs: What You Are Actually Getting

Physical and Virtual Cards

  • Virtual card: $10 per card, instant issuance
  • Physical card: Polyvinyl plastic, $50 one-time. Standard delivery 3-4 weeks (free, untracked). Priority: $15 US / $50 international (1-2 weeks, tracked)
  • Wallet integration: Apple Pay and Google Pay (add via card details + OTP)

Payment Network

  • Network: Visa international credit card
  • Card type: Secured credit (USDC-backed loan escrow)
  • Issuer: Rain
  • Custody: Self-custodial via ZeroDev smart wallet

Supported Chains (12)

Ethereum, Polygon, OP Mainnet, Base, Arbitrum One, Avalanche, BNB Chain, Monad, Mantle, Abstract, Scroll, Solana

This is the broadest chain support of any crypto card. Most cards support 1-3 chains. Avici supports 12, covering every major EVM network plus Solana.

Security Features

  • ZeroDev smart wallet: Smart contract account with social login (Google/iCloud)
  • Biometric passkeys: Every transaction requires passkey approval
  • Self-custodial escrow: Neither Rain, Avici, nor Visa controls your deposited USDC
  • Card freeze/unfreeze: Instant toggle in-app
  • Per-card spending limits: Customizable per virtual/physical card
  • PIN management: Set and change via app
  • Real-time alerts: Push notifications for every transaction

How Spending Works: Secured Credit via Loan Escrow

Unlike debit cards that pull funds instantly, Avici operates on a credit model with delayed settlement.

Example: $80 purchase at a bookstore in Austin (USDC on Base)

Step 1: Deposit USDC into your loan escrow contract

  • Send USDC on any of 12 supported chains
  • Or swap any ERC-20/SPL token via Relay Protocol (auto-converts to USDC)
  • Minimum top-up: $1. Processing: 2-7 minutes

Step 2: Receive equivalent USD credit

  • $500 USDC deposited = $500 credit line on your Visa card
  • Credit is available immediately after deposit confirmation

Step 3: Make a purchase

  • Tap Apple Pay at the bookstore terminal
  • Visa network processes $80 charge as a credit transaction
  • No transaction fee, no FX markup (USD domestic)

Step 4: Settlement (1-7 days later)

  • $80 of your escrowed USDC is liquidated to settle with Visa
  • Remaining $420 stays in your smart contract, still under your control
  • No interest charged (it is secured, not revolving)

Key difference from debit: The merchant sees a Visa credit card transaction, not a debit transaction. This can matter for rental cars, hotels, and services that prefer or require credit cards.

Fee Analysis: Zero Ongoing Costs for Domestic Spending

FeeAmount
Annual fee$0
Virtual card$10 per card
Physical card$50 one-time
Transaction fee$0
FX markup (Avici)0%
Visa cross-border fee0.4-1% on non-USD transactions
ATM withdrawal$1 + 0.65%
ATM declined$0.60
ATM balance inquiry$0.60

Cost at Different Spending Levels

Monthly SpendTx FeesFX Cost (50% intl)ATM (2x/mo)Annual FeeNet Annual Cost
$1,000$0$24-60$63$0$87-$123
$2,000$0$48-120$63$0$111-$183
$5,000$0$120-300$63$0$183-$363
$5,000 (domestic only)$0$0$63$0$63

For USD domestic spending with no ATM usage, the annual cost is literally $0. The only costs are Visa cross-border fees on international transactions and ATM withdrawal fees. Avici adds zero markup to anything.

The No-Rewards Trade-Off

The Platinum Card offers zero cashback and zero rewards. This is the core trade-off: you get sovereignty and minimal fees, but nothing back. Compare the annual returns:

CardAnnual FeeRewardsFXNet on $2K/mo (intl)
Avici Platinum$00%0.4-1%-$96 to -$240
MetaMask Virtual$01%1%$0
ether.fi Core$03%1%+$480
KAST K Card$02% pts + 4% $MOVE0.5-1.75%Up to +$960 in $MOVE + points

Avici loses to every rewards card on economics. The value proposition is not returns - it is the unique combination of: (1) secured credit (not debit), (2) self-custodial escrow, (3) 12 chains, (4) 0% FX markup, (5) no custody risk. If you earn your rewards through DeFi yield and just need a clean off-ramp, Avici is the cheapest sovereignty tool available.

Regional Availability: 48 Countries (Not Europe)

Avici is available in 48 countries across the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Middle East/Africa. Key inclusions and exclusions:

Available: US (excluding 20 states), Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Hong Kong, Japan, Mexico, Singapore, Thailand, UAE

NOT available: All of Europe, UK, India, China, Russia

This makes Avici the primary self-custodial option for users in LATAM, APAC, and MEA who cannot access European-focused cards like Gnosis Pay or ether.fi.

Refund note: Refunds sent to the card cannot be withdrawn to your wallet. They can only be spent. This is an important limitation for users expecting to return purchased items.

What Happens If Avici Goes Down?

The secured credit model creates a unique risk profile compared to debit cards.

Your escrowed USDC: We track every card's failure risk, and this is the critical question. Your USDC sits in a ZeroDev smart contract that you control via biometric passkeys. If Avici (the company) fails, your smart contract still exists on-chain. However, the ability to withdraw from the escrow may depend on Avici's infrastructure. Verify the contract's withdrawal mechanism and whether it can be called independently of Avici's servers.

Your card access: Lost immediately. Rain (the card issuer) would deactivate cards.

Unsettled transactions: If you have pending credit transactions that have not yet been settled (the 1-7 day window), these could create complications. The USDC earmarked for settlement might be locked in escrow.

Your virtual/physical card fees: Non-refundable. Maximum exposure is $50 (physical card) plus any pending settlement amount.

Rain issuer risk: Rain is a separate entity from Avici. If Rain fails but Avici survives (or vice versa), the impact differs. Rain failure stops all card transactions. Avici failure may leave smart contracts intact but without a card to spend through.

Risk mitigation: Do not over-fund the escrow. Keep only what you plan to spend in the near term. Maintain the ability to access your smart contract independently of Avici's app.

Real User Scenarios

Scenario 1: Ricardo (Sao Paulo Software Engineer, $2,000/month spending)

Setup:

  • Avici Platinum Card (LATAM, free)
  • Deposits USDC from Polygon (low gas)
  • 80% BRL domestic, 20% international USD
  • No ATM usage, Apple Pay primary

Results after 12 months:

  • Cashback: $0
  • Transaction fees: $0
  • Visa cross-border (on 80% BRL): approximately $154 (0.64% avg)
  • Annual fee: $0
  • Net annual cost: -$154

His verdict: "In Brazil, my options for self-custodial cards are extremely limited. Gnosis Pay and ether.fi are Europe-only. MetaMask works here but only on 3 chains. Avici gives me 12 chains with zero markup. The $154/year in Visa cross-border fees is the price of spending from my own smart contract. My USDC earns approximately 5% on Aave before I deposit it into the escrow - that yield more than covers the cross-border cost. For LATAM users, Avici is the only serious self-custodial option."

Scenario 2: David (Austin Freelance Developer, $3,000/month spending)

Setup:

  • Avici Platinum Card (US, free)
  • Deposits USDC from Base (low gas)
  • 100% USD domestic spending
  • Uses card for client dinners and equipment purchases
  • No ATM usage

Results after 12 months:

  • Cashback: $0
  • Transaction fees: $0
  • FX fees: $0 (100% domestic)
  • Annual fee: $0
  • Net annual cost: $0

His verdict: "I spend $3,000/month and pay literally $0 in fees. Zero. The card costs me nothing. A free KAST Standard or Pengu card would still look richer on rewards because it combines 2% points with 4% $MOVE. But KAST is custodial - my funds sit on their platform. With Avici, my USDC is in a smart contract I control. After watching FTX wipe out friends, I pay the opportunity cost of zero cashback for absolute custody. The secured credit model also means rental car companies and hotels treat it like a real credit card, which matters."

Scenario 3: Yuki (Tokyo Crypto Researcher, $1,500/month spending)

Setup:

  • Avici Platinum Card (APAC, free)
  • Deposits USDC from Solana and Ethereum
  • 60% JPY domestic, 40% international
  • Withdraws cash from ATMs twice monthly

Results after 12 months:

  • Cashback: $0
  • Transaction fees: $0
  • Visa cross-border (on 60% JPY): approximately $86
  • ATM fees ($1 + 0.65% on $250 x 24): approximately $63
  • Annual fee: $0
  • Net annual cost: -$149

Her verdict: "The ATM fees add up. At $63/year, I should upgrade to Signature ($30/year) which has $0 ATM fees - that saves $33/year net. But I wanted to test the Platinum first. The 12-chain support is the killer feature. I move between Ethereum, Solana, and Polygon depending on where my research funds are. Avici is the only card where I can deposit from all three without bridging. The MetaMask Virtual only supports 3 chains and earns 1% cashback, but for my workflow, 12 chains is worth the cashback trade-off."

The Verdict: Is the Avici Platinum Card Worth It?

Use the Avici Platinum Card if:

  • You want a self-custodial spending card with zero ongoing fees (domestic)
  • You need secured credit (not debit) for merchants that require credit cards
  • You hold assets across multiple chains and want 12-chain deposit flexibility
  • You are in LATAM, APAC, MEA, or the US where European-only cards are unavailable

Skip the Avici Platinum Card if:

  • You want cashback or rewards - Avici offers none. Every free alternative pays you something
  • You are in Europe or the UK - Avici is not available. Use ether.fi, Gnosis Pay, or MetaMask
  • You use ATMs regularly - the $1 + 0.65% fee adds up. Upgrade to Signature ($30/year) for $0 ATM
  • You want a premium card experience - Avici is functional, not aspirational

Final verdict: The Avici Platinum Card is the cheapest self-custodial spending tool in crypto for supported regions. Zero annual fee, zero transaction fees, zero FX markup, and a unique secured credit model backed by your own USDC in a smart contract you control. The absence of cashback means you leave significant money on the table compared to ether.fi Core (3%), KAST's free K Card or Pengu Card collection (2% points plus 4% $MOVE), or MetaMask Virtual (1%). Avici is for users who value custody and credit card functionality above rewards. If you just need a clean, sovereign off-ramp for USDC with no friction, $0 annual fee, and no custody risk, this is it.

Visa Platinum Network Benefits

The Platinum tier includes standard Visa Platinum benefits managed by Visa (not Avici). These are genuine perks that come with any Visa Platinum card - verified from the live Avici app:

Avici app showing Visa Platinum benefits: Concierge, Emergency Cash, Bloomberg Linea, Disney+, Extended Warranty Avici app showing Visa Platinum benefits: Price Protection, Purchase Protection, Skybox 36-month membership, Visa Airport Companion, Digital Concierge, Luxury Hotel Collection, Online Medic
  • Bloomberg Linea: Months of free financial news and data access
  • Disney+: Months of free Disney+ entertainment
  • Skybox: 36 months free membership - international package forwarding service. Particularly useful for LATAM and APAC users who shop from US retailers
  • Visa Airport Companion: Airport transportation booking
  • Visa Digital Concierge: 24/7 personal assistance
  • Visa Luxury Hotel Collection: Premium hotel rates
  • Visa Online Medic: International medical services
  • Price Protection + Purchase Protection: Standard Visa buyer protections
  • Emergency Cash Disbursement + Card Replacement: 24/7 worldwide
  • Extended Warranty: On qualifying purchases

These benefits are often overlooked in surface-level reviews because Avici does not promote them - they come from the Visa network, not from Avici. But Bloomberg Linea alone (normally $30+/month) makes the $10 card issuance fee trivial. Skybox's 36-month free package forwarding is especially relevant for users in countries where international shipping is expensive or unreliable.
