SpendNode Rating for Gnosis Pay

4.4/5
Known for: self-custody euro spending

Gnosis Pay is one of the clearest high-trust issuer stories in the market. The lineup is focused, the custody model is real, and the product identity holds together without much hand-waving.

This is near the top because the issuer combines genuine self-custody with credible execution. It is not perfect only because regional scope is still narrower than the broadest global players.

What Is Gnosis Pay?

Gnosis Pay is a self-custodial Visa debit card (not a credit card) linked to a Safe Smart Account, funded with a regional stablecoin on Gnosis Chain (EURe in the EEA, GBPe in the UK, USDCe in other supported markets), offering zero transaction fees, zero FX fees, and up to 5% cashback in GNO with weekly payouts.

Most "self-custodial" crypto cards still require you to load funds into a centralized hot wallet before spending. Gnosis Pay works differently: your money stays in a Safe Smart Account that you control until the exact moment of purchase. No exchange. No intermediary wallet. No custodial risk.

This is an architectural decision, not a marketing claim. Your spending stablecoin sits in a Safe (formerly Gnosis Safe) smart contract on Gnosis Chain. When you tap the card, the settlement partner converts your on-chain stablecoin to fiat for the merchant settlement. You retain your private keys throughout.

The Ecosystem: One Product, One Philosophy

Gnosis Pay Card - Self-custodial Visa debit card. Zero fees (transaction, FX, gas, off-ramping). Up to 5% cashback in GNO. Personal IBAN. Apple Pay. ENS name on physical card.

There are no tiers, no subscriptions, and no token staking requirements for the base card. The 5% cashback requires holding GNO tokens, and OG NFT holders receive an additional 1% boost.

Our VerdictThe strongest free self-custodial card in the EEA/UK. Your stablecoin sits in a Safe Smart Account you control, with zero card fees and up to 5% GNO cashback. The 10 GNO tier (3% cashback) offers the best risk-adjusted return for moderate European spenders. The main trade-offs are stablecoin-only funding on Gnosis Chain (EURe, GBPe, or USDCe by region) and a weekly cap on cashback-eligible spend.

The Zero-Fee Claim: Verified

Gnosis Pay's zero-fee claim holds up for card transactions, confirmed by reviewing actual settlement mechanics. The regional settlement partner handles fiat settlement with no Gnosis Pay markup. However:

The Hidden Cost: Getting the Spending Stablecoin

The card itself is free, but funding it requires the right regional stablecoin on Gnosis Chain. This is the real friction:

  1. Bank transfer where supported: Free bank transfer route for EURe or GBPe users (slowest, cheapest)
  2. Bridge from Ethereum: Bridge fees + gas ($5-20 depending on network congestion)
  3. DEX purchase: Buy the regional stablecoin on Gnosis Chain DEX where liquidity exists

For users already in the Gnosis ecosystem, this is manageable. For newcomers, the regional-stablecoin onboarding is the primary barrier.

0.1 GNO1%2%$250
1 GNO2%3%$375
10 GNO3%4%$500
100 GNO4%5%$1,250

This is the current interim cashback programme, funded by Gnosis Ltd and scheduled to run until 30 September 2026, after which partner-led programmes are expected to take over. The headline rate is only half the picture: each tier also caps how much weekly spend earns cashback. At the 3% tier (10 GNO) only the first $500 of spend each week qualifies; anything above earns nothing and the cap does not roll over. Below 0.1 GNO there is no cashback at all. Payouts land in GNO in your Safe the following Thursday.

GNO opportunity cost: 100 GNO at current prices represents a significant holding in a governance token - a trade-off worth examining closely when reviewing the higher cashback tiers. GNO has historically been less volatile than utility tokens (CRO, WXT, PLU) because it backs the Gnosis Chain itself, but it still carries crypto market risk.

Safe Smart Account Architecture

Gnosis Pay's architecture is distinct from every other card:

  • Safe Smart Account: Your funds live in a programmable smart contract wallet (Safe, formerly Gnosis Safe - the most battle-tested smart account in crypto with $100B+ in TVL)
  • Regional stablecoin: EURe in the EEA, GBPe in the UK, USDCe in other supported markets
  • Gnosis Chain: Low-cost EVM-compatible chain (sub-cent gas fees)
  • ENS customization: Your physical card can display your ENS name
  • Apple Pay: Supported for contactless payments
  • Personal IBAN: European users get a personal IBAN for receiving fiat deposits

The technical stack means your funds are secured by smart contract logic, not by trusting an exchange. Gnosis Pay cannot move your funds without your signature.

Real User Scenarios

Scenario 1: Liam (DeFi Developer, EUR 2,500/month, 100% EURe)

Setup:

  • Gnosis Pay Card (free)
  • 100 GNO held + OG NFT
  • 5% cashback rate (max tier + OG boost)
  • Funds EURe via Monerium SEPA (free)

Monthly math:

  • Cashback: EUR 2,500 x 5% = EUR 125 in GNO
  • Transaction fees: EUR 0
  • FX fees: EUR 0 (all EEA spending)
  • Funding cost: EUR 0 (SEPA to Monerium)
  • Net monthly value: EUR 125 = EUR 1,500/year

His verdict: "This is the only card where I truly own my money. The Safe integration means my spending account is a smart contract I control. The 5% in GNO is the best self-custodial cashback rate available. No exchange risk. No custodial risk. For anyone already on Gnosis Chain, this is the obvious choice."

Scenario 2: Nina (DeFi Curious, EUR 1,500/month, minimal GNO)

Setup:

  • Gnosis Pay Card (free)
  • 0.1 GNO held (the minimum for any cashback), no OG NFT
  • 1% base cashback, $250/week eligible-spend cap (about EUR 1,000/month)
  • Bridges EURe from Ethereum

Monthly math:

  • Eligible spend: about EUR 1,000 of her EUR 1,500 (the rest exceeds the weekly cap)
  • Cashback: EUR 1,000 x 1% = EUR 10 in GNO
  • Transaction fees: EUR 0
  • Bridge cost: approx. EUR 5-10/month (bridging from Ethereum)
  • Net monthly value: roughly EUR 0-5 = EUR 0-60/year

Her verdict: "At 1% on the minimum holding, the weekly cap and the bridge cost basically cancel each other out. The honest reason I stay is self-custody, not the rewards. If I wanted the cashback to actually matter I would need to climb to the 10 GNO tier, which lifts both my rate to 3% and my weekly cap to $500."

Scenario 3: Thomas (Privacy-Focused, EUR 3,000/month, 40% international)

Setup:

  • Gnosis Pay Card (free)
  • 50 GNO held (sits in the 10 GNO tier: 3%, $500/week cap)
  • 3% cashback rate, about EUR 2,000/month of eligible spend
  • Travels across EEA

Monthly math:

  • Eligible spend: about EUR 2,000 of his EUR 3,000 (the $500/week cap tops out near EUR 2,000/month)
  • Cashback: EUR 2,000 x 3% = EUR 60 in GNO
  • FX fees within EEA: EUR 0
  • FX on non-EUR (40%): EUR 1,200 x 0.4% (Visa rate) = EUR 4.80
  • Net monthly value: about EUR 55 = EUR 660/year

His verdict: "The self-custody model is why I chose this over Kraken. My money is in a Safe, not on an exchange. Holding 50 GNO does not buy me a higher cap than 10 GNO would, so most of my spend past EUR 2,000 a month earns nothing, but the 3% on what does qualify still beats most custodial cards and I sleep better knowing there is zero exchange risk."

Gnosis Pay wins on:

  • Truest self-custody model (Safe Smart Account, $100B+ TVL)
  • Highest self-custodial cashback (5% in GNO)
  • Zero fees across the board (transaction, FX, gas)
  • ENS name on physical card (Web3 identity)
  • Personal IBAN for fiat on-ramp

Gnosis Pay loses on:

  • Stablecoin-only funding on Gnosis Chain (EURe in the EEA, GBPe in the UK, USDCe elsewhere - one asset per region, vs multi-asset competitors)
  • Gnosis Chain ecosystem barrier (newcomers need to learn bridging)
  • A weekly cap limits how much spend earns cashback at each tier
  • EEA, UK, and Switzerland plus select Latin American markets (no US, no broad APAC)
  • GNO token holding required for competitive rates

Who Should Use Gnosis Pay?

Ideal user profile:

  • DeFi-native user already on Gnosis Chain or Ethereum
  • Values self-custody above all else (zero exchange risk)
  • Lives in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland
  • Comfortable with EURe as primary spending asset
  • Willing to hold GNO for higher cashback tiers
  • Wants a spending account that is a smart contract, not a bank account

Who should avoid:

  • Users who do not want to learn stablecoin bridging (use Kraken for simple exchange spending)
  • Users who want multi-asset spending (one stablecoin per region - use Kraken for 600+ assets)
  • Users outside the supported countries: EEA, UK, Switzerland, and select Latin American markets (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico). Still unavailable in the US
  • Businesses: the Gnosis Pay terms restrict accounts to personal use, so this is not a card for company expenses
  • Users who want a credit line or revolving billing (this is a debit-only product)
  • Users who want maximum cashback without holding GNO (use ether.fi Core 3% free or Coinbase 4% free)

Our take: Gnosis Pay is the most technically pure self-custodial card we cover. Your money sits in a Safe Smart Account you control, and Gnosis Pay cannot touch it without your signature. The zero-fee structure means every cent of cashback is pure profit.

At the 3% tier (10 GNO, approx. $3,000), it offers the best risk-adjusted return of any crypto card for European users: zero custody risk, zero fees, 3% cashback, and a liquid GNO position you can sell anytime. The trade-off is the regional-stablecoin ecosystem requirement - you need to be comfortable operating on Gnosis Chain.

For DeFi-native Europeans who want to spend on-chain money in the real world without trusting a centralized intermediary, nothing else comes close.

Is Gnosis Pay Safe?

Licensing and compliance:

  • Monerium: Licensed Icelandic e-money institution (MiCA-compliant), handles EURe issuance and fiat settlement
  • Gnosis Chain: Decentralized L1 blockchain, not itself a regulated entity
  • Safe: Decentralized smart contract infrastructure (audited, $100B+ TVL)
  • Card issuance: Monavate Limited (FCA authorized EMI, FRN: 901097)

What is protected:

  • EURe is fully backed by EUR held in regulated accounts (Monerium attestation)
  • Card transactions under Visa Zero Liability
  • Your private keys - Gnosis Pay cannot access your funds without your signature

What is NOT protected:

  • GNO token value (governance token, subject to market conditions)
  • Smart contract risk (theoretical - Safe has never been exploited, but code risk exists)
  • Availability could change if Monerium or its banking partners exit the partnership
  • No FDIC or deposit guarantee scheme applies to on-chain assets

What Happens If Gnosis Pay Fails?

Your stablecoin in the Safe Smart Account:

  • This is the key advantage. Your EURe, GBPe, or USDCe remains in your Safe wallet regardless of what happens to Gnosis Pay
  • You retain your private keys and can move EURe to any other platform or DEX
  • Expected recovery: 100% - your funds were never in Gnosis Pay's custody
  • This is fundamentally different from custodial cards where funds are on the exchange

Your GNO cashback rewards:

  • Already in your wallet when earned (weekly payouts)
  • Can be traded on any DEX supporting Gnosis Chain
  • GNO value depends on the broader Gnosis ecosystem, not on Gnosis Pay specifically

Your card functionality:

  • Card stops working if Gnosis Pay's integration with Monerium breaks
  • But your underlying EURe balance is unaffected
  • You could theoretically redeem EURe for EUR through Monerium directly

What could fail:

  • Stablecoin issuer failure: If the relevant stablecoin issuer fails, redemption to fiat could be delayed. EURe/GBPe/USDCe reserves and issuer structures differ by region, so this is an issuer-specific risk.
  • Gnosis Chain issues: Extremely unlikely given the chain's maturity, but a chain halt would temporarily freeze card functionality
  • Smart contract exploit: Safe has never been exploited and secures $100B+, but theoretical risk exists

Risk level: Based on the custody architecture reviewed above, this represents the lowest custodial risk of any crypto card. Your funds are in a smart contract you control. The main risk is not losing funds, but losing the ability to spend them via the card if the Gnosis Pay integration fails.

Is Gnosis Pay a Scam?

  1. Gnosis Pay is operated by Gnosis Ltd, the team behind Gnosis Chain (formerly xDai Chain). Gnosis has been building in the Ethereum ecosystem since 2015 and co-created Safe (formerly Gnosis Safe), the most widely used smart account infrastructure in crypto with $100B+ in total value locked.

  2. The Visa card is issued by Monavate Limited, authorized by the UK Financial Conduct Authority as an Electronic Money Institution (FRN: 901097). Monavate is a regulated card issuer, not a crypto startup.

  3. Fiat settlement is handled by regulated partners, with EURe/GBPe issued through Monerium and USDCe exposure through Circle in supported non-EEA/non-UK markets.

  4. Your funds are self-custodial. Your regional stablecoin sits in a Safe Smart Account on Gnosis Chain that you control with your private keys. Gnosis Pay cannot access your funds without your signature. This is verifiable on-chain at any time via block explorer.

  5. KYC is required for all cardholders, processed through Gnosis Pay's verification flow before card issuance.

  6. The entire infrastructure is open source. Safe smart contracts, Gnosis Chain, and the card module are all publicly auditable. This is not a black-box system.

What to be aware of

  • Gnosis Pay has no app store listing (web-based interface), so there is no public user review data to reference.
  • The GNO holding requirement for competitive cashback rates above 1% creates a token-dependent model where card economics are tied to a governance token.
  • Stablecoin-only funding on Gnosis Chain (EURe, GBPe, or USDCe by region) means ecosystem lock-in on Gnosis Chain.
  • A Latin American expansion is now live (Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Bolivia); further markets such as the US and Canada are announced but not yet live.
  • The account is for personal use only; the terms of service prohibit business use.
