SpendNode Rating for Ethena Pay
Ethena Pay pairs a self-custodial USDe wallet, bank-transfer rails, and a Rain-managed secured Visa issued by Third National. Cashback runs 4-5% on first-band monthly spend, while the Daily Boost can lift eligible balances to a 5-6% annualized total rate.
Detailed fee disclosures and the free Standard tier support the rating. It is held back by an early beta with waitlisted access, synthetic-dollar balance risk, dependence on the app and partner programs, and upper-tier access terms that are not fully published.

Ethena Pay is a self-custodial finance app operated by Ethena Pay Ltd., a Malta-incorporated software company tied to the Ethena ecosystem and USDe. It combines a wallet, bank-transfer rails, and the Ethena Pay Spend Card, a secured virtual Visa issued by Third National under a Rain-managed program. The card pays tiered cashback in AVAX and is available to eligible non-US persons in 49 countries.
What Is Ethena Pay?
Ethena Pay brings three functions into one app: a self-custodial wallet centered on USDe, local bank-transfer details for moving fiat, and a virtual Visa secured by assets in the wallet. The card's free Standard tier earns 4% cashback on the first $2,500 of monthly spend, while eligible Pro and VIP users can reach 4.5% and 5% on larger first bands. Rewards arrive in AVAX rather than dollars.
The app remains in beta, with access expanding in weekly batches. New applicants may see a waitlist and an access-code field rather than immediate admission.

The balance-and-spend pitch - Ethena Pay combines card rewards with a Daily Boost on eligible balances. The Boost is an annualized promotional rate, not a deposit account or guaranteed interest.
The Product Lineup
- Ethena Pay Spend Card - a free virtual Visa at Standard tier, with 0% APR and bracket-style cashback beginning at 4%.
- Daily Boost - tops eligible balances up to a 5% annualized total rate on Standard or 6% on Pro and VIP, within tier caps. One qualifying card transaction is required each calendar month.
- Transfers and wallet - free transfers between Ethena Pay users, bank-transfer support, and withdrawals to external wallets. Supported features and currencies vary by jurisdiction.

How Ethena Pay Works
Private keys remain on the user's device behind passkeys and biometrics. Ethena Pay says it cannot access or recover those keys and does not hold customer funds. That is materially different from an exchange card, but it also leaves recovery responsibility with the user.
The card is a secured product rather than a conventional debit card. Purchases create obligations backed by collateral in a linked wallet. The card terms allow third-party liquidation if an obligation remains unpaid or collateral falls below the amount owed. It carries 0% APR, but users still need to monitor statements, repayment obligations, collateral value, and possible penalty fees.
Third National issues the Visa card, Signify Holdings operating as Rain manages the program, and Avalanche handles payment settlement. The wallet can also support assets on Ethereum, Polygon, Optimism, and Arbitrum; those wallet networks should not be confused with the card's settlement network.
Cashback Rates and Limits
Ethena Pay applies rates like tax brackets. Moving into a lower band affects only additional spending, not the cashback already earned earlier in the month.
| Tier | Portion of monthly spend | Cashback |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $0-$2,500 | 4% |
| $2,500-$4,000 | 1% | |
| Above $4,000 | 0% | |
| Pro | $0-$8,000 | 4.5% |
| $8,000-$10,000 | 2% | |
| $10,000-$12,000 | 1% | |
| Above $12,000 | 0.5% | |
| VIP | $0-$20,000 | 5% |
| $20,000-$30,000 | 2% | |
| $30,000-$40,000 | 1% | |
| Above $40,000 | 0.5% |
Cashback is calculated in dollars and paid in AVAX at the exchange rate when it is credited, usually after the purchase settles in one to three business days. The value can rise or fall after payout. Purchases under $1 and categories such as ATM withdrawals, account funding, gambling, gift cards, financial assets, and peer-to-peer transfers do not qualify.
Standard is free. Ethena Pay's public FAQ says Pro is available through a subscription or referrals, but does not publish complete Pro and VIP access terms. Launch reporting described ENA-based and referral-based thresholds; treat the terms presented during enrollment as controlling until Ethena Pay documents them publicly.
Daily Boost on Eligible Balances
The Daily Boost tops up the market-driven base rate on eligible balances to the following annualized totals:
| Tier | Annualized total rate | Eligible balance cap |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | 5% | $5,000 |
| Pro | 6% | $15,000 |
| VIP | 6% | $50,000 |
The rate is all-in rather than additive. If the underlying base rate rises, the top-up becomes smaller. The Boost accrues and pays daily in USDe, but requires at least one qualifying card transaction each month. Ethena Pay classifies it as a discretionary promotional incentive, not interest or an insured deposit return.
Fees and Foreign Exchange
Ethena Pay adds no FX markup or cross-border fee. Non-USD purchases can still incur Visa's currency-conversion charge, described by Ethena Pay as typically around 1% but variable by currency. USD purchases do not require that conversion.
| Fee | Current term |
|---|---|
| Account, monthly, and inactivity fee | $0 |
| Virtual-card issuance, activation, and replacement | $0 |
| Purchase APR | 0% |
| Ethena Pay FX markup | 0% |
| Visa conversion on non-USD purchases | Typically about 1%; varies |
| ATM withdrawal where supported | $1 + 0.65%, plus possible operator fee |
| Late payment | Up to $40 |
| Returned payment | Up to $29 |
ATM access depends on the card, device, and country, and withdrawals earn no cashback. On-ramp partners and blockchains may also charge their own fees.
Security, Entity, and Product Risk
Ethena Pay Ltd. is a Maltese software company, registration C 114576. It states that it is not a bank, money-service business, investment adviser, or custodian. Regulated functions are delegated to other providers: Third National issues the card, Rain manages the program, and licensed partners provide bank-transfer and ramp services.
Self-custody limits direct exposure to Ethena Pay holding customer balances, but it does not remove every dependency. An app or program interruption could affect card use, bank transfers, Daily Boost payments, or pending cashback. Access to assets also depends on the embedded wallet and the user's ability to authenticate. USDe adds a separate asset risk because it is a synthetic dollar rather than a fiat-reserve stablecoin.
How to Apply for the Ethena Pay Spend Card
- Open the Ethena Pay download page.
- Install the app and create an account with Apple, Google, or email.
- Set up the passkey and biometric protection for the self-custodial wallet.
- Complete identity verification through the in-app Sumsub flow.
- If the app places you on the beta waitlist, wait for access or enter a valid access code if you have one.
- Review the tier and collateral terms shown at enrollment, then issue the virtual card and add it to Apple Pay where supported. Google Pay is listed as coming soon.

Who Ethena Pay Fits
The strongest case is the free Standard tier for an eligible digital-first user who already understands USDe and normally spends less than $2,500 per month. That keeps purchases inside the 4% band without requiring a paid tier. A $500 monthly spender would earn $20 per month in AVAX before considering token-price movement. Keeping a full $5,000 eligible balance at the 5% annualized Boost rate would add about $250 over a year if the promotional rate and monthly-use requirement remained satisfied.
It is a weaker fit for anyone who needs a physical card, dependable ATM access, Google Pay today, immediate admission, or rewards denominated in dollars. Users in the US, EU, UK, and Canada cannot currently apply; the card excludes US persons even if they are physically in a supported market.
How Ethena Pay Compares
- Hyperbeat uses a related Third National and Rain secured-card structure and supports borrowing against collateral. Ethena Pay has the stronger free everyday cashback band; Hyperbeat has broader borrowing and trading features.
- Solid combines self-custody with USDC spending and has an EEA footprint that Ethena Pay lacks. Its reserve model is simpler than USDe's synthetic-dollar structure.
- RedotPay has a longer operating record, physical cards, and broader cash access across several overlapping markets. Ethena Pay offers stronger headline cashback and self-custody but is earlier in its rollout.
Verdict
Ethena Pay's free Standard tier is competitive: 4% on the first $2,500 of monthly spend, no fixed card fee, user-controlled wallet keys, and a balance Boost tied to ordinary card use. Its less favorable parts are equally important: AVAX-denominated rewards, a secured-card liquidation mechanism, USDe exposure, limited ATM and mobile-wallet coverage, and upper-tier access terms that are not fully public.
The product is worth considering for an eligible user who understands those mechanics and can get through the beta waitlist. It is too early to treat it like an established primary account.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Ethena Pay crypto card available in the United States?
No. Ethena Pay crypto card is not available in the United States.
Is Ethena Pay a bank?
No. Ethena Pay Ltd. is a Malta-incorporated software company (C 114576) and says so plainly: it is not a bank, holds no customer funds, and takes no deposits. Your balance sits in a self-custodial wallet only you control, the fiat IBAN comes from licensed banking partners, and the Spend Card is issued by Third National, a Puerto Rico-chartered bank, under license from Visa.
How much cashback does the Ethena Pay card earn?
Between 4% and 5% on the first band of your monthly spend, depending on tier: Standard earns 4% on the first $2,500, Pro 4.5% on the first $8,000, and VIP 5% on the first $20,000, with lower rates on spend beyond each band. The bands work like tax brackets, so crossing one never reduces what earlier spend already earned. Cashback is paid in AVAX, converted at the rate on the day it is credited.
What is the Daily Boost?
A top-up that brings eligible balances to your tier's total annualized rate: 5% at Standard (on up to $5,000) and 6% at Pro and VIP (on up to $15,000 and $50,000). Balance above the cap earns the market-driven USDe base rate only. The Boost accrues daily, pays daily in USDe, and requires at least one qualifying card transaction per calendar month. Ethena Pay labels it a discretionary promotional incentive, not interest or a guaranteed yield.
Which countries does Ethena Pay support?
49 countries at launch: most of Latin America and the Caribbean, plus Bangladesh, Pakistan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, the UAE, nine African markets, Australia, and New Zealand. The US, EU, UK, and Canada are excluded for now, listed as coming later, and the Spend Card is not offered to US persons at all.
