Crypto.com has added Dubai Duty Free as a merchant that accepts Crypto.com Pay, its QR-based checkout product. The company confirmed the partnership in an official post on August 5, 2026, framing it as bringing crypto payments to one of the UAE's largest retail operators.
Dubai Duty Free is among the highest-grossing airport retailers in the world by sales, so acceptance at its stores puts crypto checkout in front of a large flow of international travelers passing through Dubai International Airport. Shoppers who hold balances in the Crypto.com app can scan to pay at the till rather than converting to cash or reaching for a bank card first.
A payment rail separate from the Visa card
Crypto.com Pay is not the same product as the company's Visa cards. Pay is an app-based system where the merchant accepts a QR code and the balance settles from your Crypto.com account, closer to a wallet checkout than a plastic swipe. The Visa card program, by contrast, works anywhere Visa is accepted and does not depend on the merchant integrating anything.
That distinction matters for readers deciding how to spend in the UAE. The Crypto.com Visa cards already function at Dubai Duty Free the way any Visa card does. What is new here is direct Pay acceptance, which routes the transaction through Crypto.com's own rail and typically avoids the standard card-network interchange. For the merchant, that can mean lower processing costs; for the shopper, it is another way to pay from the same balance.
Merchant acceptance is the harder growth lever
New country availability and new card tiers get the headlines, but a card or wallet is only as useful as the places that take it. Building out named merchant acceptance, especially a high-traffic retailer like Dubai Duty Free, is slower work than shipping a feature and does more to make crypto spendable in daily life. This is the same theme behind payment firms racing to plug stablecoins into existing card networks.
For UAE-based users and visitors, the practical effect is narrow but real: one more checkout where you can spend directly from a crypto balance. It does not change fees on the Crypto.com card, staking requirements, or cashback tiers, and Crypto.com Pay availability still depends on the merchant and your account region.
Details still thin on the terms
Crypto.com's post confirmed the acceptance but did not spell out which stores or terminals are covered, whether it applies across all Dubai Duty Free locations, or the conversion spread applied at checkout. As with any crypto-to-fiat payment at the point of sale, the quoted price is rarely the whole cost: a conversion spread is usually baked into the exchange rate even when no explicit fee shows on the receipt. Travelers weighing Pay against a straight card tap should keep that in mind until Crypto.com publishes the terms.
Overview
Crypto.com Pay is now accepted at Dubai Duty Free, adding a major UAE airport retailer to the list of merchants that take Crypto.com's QR checkout. It is a merchant-acceptance expansion, not a change to the card products, fees, or rewards. The upside is a wider set of places to spend a crypto balance directly; the open question is the checkout conversion cost, which Crypto.com has not detailed.
