Hong Kong plans to launch a gold token representing a standard 400-ounce gold bar, according to Cointelegraph's November 3 report citing the South China Morning Post. The project is intended for interbank gold transactions. As of November 3, 2026, it remains a planned initiative, not a live retail product available for purchase.
A Full Gold Bar Becomes the Transaction Unit
Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury Christopher Hui described the project during Hong Kong FinTech Week on November 2, according to China Daily's account of his remarks. He said the government would undertake the interbank tokenization project soon.
The proposed token would represent a standard 400-ounce bar, with pricing based on Hong Kong Gold HAU, the city's gold reference price. The full-bar transaction unit fits the proposed use for transactions between banks.
Using HAU would tie the token's valuation to Hong Kong's own gold benchmark. The proposal thus brings both the digital representation of bullion and local pricing infrastructure into the city's effort to become a global gold hub.
Settlement Is the Practical Test
The official FinTech Week agenda separately includes a session on gold and tokenized deposits, describing the use of tokenized deposits to support gold-trading settlement. Its stated focus is the infrastructure needed for Hong Kong's developing commodities ecosystem.
Representing gold digitally addresses only part of a trade. A buyer must also deliver payment, and the participants must agree when the exchange is complete. Bringing gold and tokenized deposits into the same discussion addresses the transaction process on which the digital record's usefulness depends.
For the broader crypto ecosystem, the proposal offers a specific commodity transaction to which tokenization could be applied. Its practical value will depend on execution between financial institutions. The announcement supplies no measured improvement in settlement speed or transaction costs, so an efficiency figure cannot yet be attached to the proposal.
