Coinbase used its third-quarter 2026 results to confirm it bought 643 Bitcoin during the period, pushing its corporate holdings to 17,954 BTC. At the September 30 close, that stack carried a fair value of about $1.5 billion against a cost basis of $1.26 billion. Bitcoin Magazine flagged the disclosure first, and the figures sit in Coinbase's quarterly filing with the SEC.

The widely shared "$1.5 billion Bitcoin" line is the value of the entire treasury, not the size of a single quarter's purchase. The real Q3 move was 643 coins added to a position Coinbase has been building for years.

The 643 coins behind the $1.5 billion headline

On the earnings call, CEO Brian Armstrong said the company had just bought its 18,000th bitcoin, a round-number marker a few coins past the 17,954 reported at quarter end. The addition itself is modest. At recent prices, 643 coins is worth somewhere around $50 million, a rounding error against Coinbase's quarterly cash flows.

The position's headline value moves with the market. Bitcoin traded at $77,036 as of October 30, 2026, down 4.9 percent on the day, according to CoinMarketCap. At that level, 17,954 BTC is worth roughly $1.38 billion, still above the $1.26 billion cost basis but below the quarter-end mark. That gap is the point: a fair-value number is a snapshot, not locked-in cash.

Paper gains carried the quarter

Coinbase reported net income of $718.7 million for the three months to September 30, up 66 percent. Net revenue came in at $1.2 billion, split between $590.2 million in transaction revenue and $570.2 million in subscription and services revenue. Adjusted EBITDA was $332.9 million.

Most of the profit growth came from unrealized gains on the crypto Coinbase holds, not from a jump in trading or subscriptions. Under current fair-value rules, the rise and fall of those holdings flows straight through net income, so reported earnings now track crypto prices more closely than they used to. That cuts both ways (analysis): when Bitcoin and other assets climb into a quarter-end, the bottom line looks strong; when they slide afterward, as Bitcoin has into late October, the next quarter inherits the reversal.

Beyond the balance sheet, Coinbase said Coinbase One subscriptions hit an all-time high and its prediction markets business passed $200 million in annualized revenue. Those are the lines that speak to the underlying business, and they grew without a Bitcoin tailwind.

Corporate treasuries keep stacking Bitcoin

Holding Bitcoin as a reserve asset has moved from a Michael Saylor curiosity to a standard line item for crypto-native public companies. Coinbase's approach is more measured than the debt-funded accumulation some peers run. A 643-coin quarter is small next to its operations, and the exchange also carries crypto as part of running its markets rather than as a pure bet. Even Strategy, the most aggressive corporate buyer, paused its Bitcoin purchases this month to fund a stock buyback, a sign the accumulation trade is settling into a routine rather than racing ahead without limit.

Coinbase is best known as a trading venue, but it also runs consumer products, including a retail card program that pays rewards in Bitcoin. The corporate treasury and the consumer card rhyme: both are ways to accumulate Bitcoin steadily instead of timing the market, one at a $1.5 billion scale and one at a few dollars of crypto rewards per swipe. For a holder who prefers the second route, the mechanics matter as much as the headline rate, since the disclosed reward is rarely the full picture once conversion and network spreads are counted.

Overview

Coinbase added 643 Bitcoin in the third quarter of 2026, bringing its treasury to 17,954 BTC with a fair value near $1.5 billion at the September 30 close and a cost basis of $1.26 billion. Net income rose 66 percent to $718.7 million, though most of that gain came from unrealized appreciation on crypto holdings rather than core operations. With Bitcoin at $77,036 as of October 30, 2026, the position has slipped to about $1.38 billion, a reminder that fair-value marks move in both directions. The quarter also brought record Coinbase One subscriptions and a prediction markets business past $200 million in annualized revenue.
