SpendNode Rating

3.8/5
Best for: premium rewards inside the Uphold ecosystem

Uphold Elite is trying to be a serious spend product, not just an exchange add-on with a card attached. That makes it more interesting, but it also raises the standard.

Works if you are already inside Uphold. Outside that context, the card has to justify a paid tier against free alternatives that earn comparable rates. It does not quite get there. The name says Elite, but the product is closer to solid mid-range.

What Is the Uphold Elite Card?

The Uphold Elite Card is a metal Visa debit card for US residents, issued by Cross River Bank (member FDIC). It earns 4% back in XRP on purchases funded by crypto or metals, and 3% on purchases funded by fiat or stablecoins, up to $300/month in rewards. Zero foreign transaction fees and zero ATM fees from Uphold.

The Uphold Elite Card is the premium tier of Uphold's US card lineup. For $99.99/year, you get a metal Visa with the highest reward rates Uphold offers (4% on crypto-funded purchases, 3% on fiat-funded), genuine 0% FX fees, and $0 ATM withdrawals.

The question is not whether these features are good - they are. The question is whether $99.99/year is worth it compared to the free Essential Card or competing cards from Coinbase and Gemini.

Fees and Rates

Explicit fees:

  • Annual fee: $99.99 (auto-renews, non-refundable)
  • Foreign transaction fee: $0
  • ATM fee (Uphold): $0 (third-party ATM operator fees still apply)
  • Physical card: $0 (metal card included)
  • Card replacement: 1 free per year, $29.99 additional

Hidden costs (conversion spreads): When you spend a non-USD asset, Uphold converts it to USD at a spread above mid-market rate:

  • USDC/USDT: 0.5-0.7%
  • BTC/ETH/XRP: 0.8-1.2%
  • Altcoins: 1.5-2.5%
  • Gold/Silver: 2.0-3.0%

Net cost at $2,000/month from BTC (1% spread):

  • Conversion cost: $2,000 x 1% = $20/month = $240/year
  • Reward income: $2,000 x 4% = $80/month = $960/year (under $300/mo cap)
  • Annual fee: $99.99
  • Net benefit: $620/year

Net cost at $2,000/month from USDC (0.6% spread):

  • Conversion cost: $2,000 x 0.6% = $12/month = $144/year
  • Reward income: $2,000 x 3% = $60/month = $720/year
  • Annual fee: $99.99
  • Net benefit: $476/year

Spending and ATM Limits

Limit TypeAmount
Daily retail spending$25,000
Monthly retail spending$100,000
ATM daily withdrawals$2,000 (3 transactions)
ATM monthly withdrawals$10,000 (30 transactions)

These are among the highest limits in the crypto card space. For comparison, Coinbase Card caps at $2,500/day and the Essential Card at $2,500/day.

Rewards on This Tier

Elite rewards depend on what asset funds the purchase:

4% XRP back on purchases funded by:

  • Cryptocurrencies (BTC, ETH, XRP, etc.)
  • Precious metals (Gold, Silver)

3% XRP back on purchases funded by:

  • Fiat currencies (USD)
  • Stablecoins (USDC, USDT)

Monthly cap: $300 in rewards. At 4% that means the cap hits at $7,500/month spending. At 3%, it hits at $10,000/month. Rewards over the cap do not carry over.

Payout: XRP credited within 10 business days of month end. Minimum $1.00 payout (rolls over if below threshold).

Excluded categories: Money orders, wire transfers, gambling, government services, financial institutions, charitable organizations, and other cash-like transactions. See Uphold rewards terms for the full exclusion list.

The XRP Volatility Factor

Rewards are calculated in USD but paid in XRP at the conversion rate when credited. Between the purchase date and the payout date (up to 40 days), XRP price can move significantly.

Example: You earn $120 in rewards during March. XRP is $0.55 when credited on April 10th. You receive 218 XRP. If XRP drops to $0.45 by the time you sell, your $120 in rewards is now worth $98.

Mitigation: Convert XRP to USDC or another stablecoin immediately upon receipt to lock in value.

Break-Even Math

The free Essential Card earns 2% XRP with no annual fee. The Elite costs $99.99/year for the extra 2%/1% reward rate plus 0% FX and $0 ATM.

Crypto-funded spending (4% vs 2% = 2% difference):

  • Break-even: $99.99 / 0.02 = $5,000/year = approx. $417/month

Fiat-funded spending (3% vs 2% = 1% difference):

  • Break-even: $99.99 / 0.01 = $9,999/year = approx. $834/month

Add FX savings for travelers:

  • Essential charges $1.50 per foreign transaction
  • At 6 foreign transactions/month: $9/month = $108/year
  • This alone nearly covers the $99.99 fee

The Precious Metals Edge

The Elite Card lets you spend directly from Gold and Silver holdings at 4% XRP back. No other crypto card offers this.

Use case: You hold $30,000 in Gold as an inflation hedge. You need $500 for an unexpected expense. Instead of selling Gold on an exchange, withdrawing to a bank (2-3 days), and then spending, you set Gold as your spending priority and tap to pay.

Cost: 2-3% conversion spread on Gold = $10-15 on a $500 purchase. Plus you earn 4% back = $20 in XRP.

Net: You accessed your Gold liquidity instantly and came out $5-10 ahead.

This is a niche feature, but for precious metals holders it is genuinely unique across the entire crypto card market.

How This Tier Compares

vs Uphold Essential Card: Essential is free with 2% XRP on everything. Elite costs $99.99/year but earns 4%/3% XRP, has 0% FX (vs $1.50 flat), $0 ATM (vs $2.95), and $25,000/day limits (vs $2,500/day). Elite breaks even at approx. $417/month from crypto. Essential wins for casual domestic US users spending under $400/month.

vs Coinbase Card: Both US-regulated Visa debit. Coinbase offers up to 4% crypto rewards (rotating categories), $0 annual, 0% FX. Uphold Elite offers 4%/3% XRP (consistent on all purchases), $99.99/yr, 0% FX. Coinbase rewards vary by month. Uphold rewards are asset-funding-dependent. Uphold wins on precious metals and fiat currency flexibility. Coinbase has no annual fee.

vs Gemini Credit Card: Gemini is a Mastercard World Elite credit card (credit check required) with up to 4% in 50+ cryptos, $0 annual, 0% FX. Uphold Elite is a Visa debit (no credit check) with 4%/3% XRP, $99.99/yr, 0% FX. Gemini wins on permanent reward tiers and no annual fee. Uphold wins on 300+ assets and precious metals. Both US only.

Real Scenarios

Marcus - US Resident, $3,000/month, Frequent Traveler

Setup: 70% domestic spending, 30% international. Funds card primarily from USDC and BTC.

Monthly breakdown:

  • Domestic crypto-funded: $1,500 x 4% = $60 reward, $1,500 x 1% spread = -$15
  • Domestic fiat-funded: $600 x 3% = $18 reward, $0 spread
  • International crypto-funded: $900 x 4% = $36 reward, $900 x 1% spread = -$9, FX fee = $0

Annual totals:

  • Rewards: ($60 + $18 + $36) x 12 = $1,368
  • Spreads: ($15 + $9) x 12 = -$288
  • Annual fee: -$99.99
  • Net benefit: $980/year

If Marcus used Essential instead:

  • Rewards: $3,000 x 2% x 12 = $720
  • FX fee: approx. 6 foreign txns/month x $1.50 x 12 = -$108
  • Spreads: -$288
  • Net benefit: $324/year

Elite advantage: $656/year

Priya - US Resident, $800/month, Domestic Only

Setup: 100% domestic, funds from USDC.

Monthly breakdown:

  • $800 x 3% (fiat/stablecoin rate) = $24 reward, $800 x 0.6% spread = -$4.80

Annual totals:

  • Rewards: $24 x 12 = $288
  • Spreads: $4.80 x 12 = -$57.60
  • Annual fee: -$99.99
  • Net benefit: $130.41/year

If Priya used Essential instead:

  • Rewards: $800 x 2% x 12 = $192
  • Spreads: -$57.60
  • Net benefit: $134.40/year

Essential wins by $4/year. At $800/month domestic-only spending from stablecoins, the two cards are nearly identical. Essential is the better choice here since there is no FX or ATM advantage to capture.

Is the Uphold Elite Card Safe?

The Elite Card is a Visa debit issued by Cross River Bank (member FDIC). USD balances are FDIC-insured up to $250,000. Uphold holds NYDFS BitLicense, FinCEN MSB registration, and 51 state licenses.

Custodial risk: All assets sit on Uphold's platform. Crypto and precious metals are not insured. If Uphold were to fail, FDIC covers USD balances but crypto holdings would be subject to bankruptcy proceedings. You cannot recover funds with a seed phrase - there is no self-custody option.

Monthly transparency reports: Uphold publishes self-reported reserve backing reports since 2015. These are not third-party audited proof-of-reserves.

For a full safety breakdown, see Is Uphold Safe? on the vendor hub.

Who Should Choose This Tier

Get Elite if:

  • You spend more than $420/month (the break-even point)
  • You travel internationally at all (0% FX vs $1.50/txn on Essential)
  • You need limits above $2,500/day
  • You want a metal card at no extra cost
  • You hold precious metals and want instant spending liquidity

Get Essential instead if:

  • You spend under $400/month
  • You never travel internationally
  • You are testing Uphold before committing to the annual fee

Consider alternatives if:

  • You want self-custody: MetaMask Card (wallet-native, no exchange risk)
  • You want higher rewards without annual fee: COCA Card (up to 8%, $0/year)
  • You want staking-based permanent tiers: Crypto.com (1-5% CRO)
  • You want a credit card: Gemini Credit Card (up to 4%, no annual fee, builds credit)

Our view: The Uphold Elite Card is the strongest US-market crypto debit card for active spenders who travel internationally. The 4% XRP on crypto-funded purchases with genuine 0% FX fees and $25,000/day limits is a compelling combination. The $99.99 annual fee pays for itself at just $420/month in crypto spending. The precious metals spending feature is unique in the market. The main risk is custodial - if you prioritize self-custody, look elsewhere.
