Krak Mastercard Review
The Krak Mastercard is a custodial debit card issued by Monavate (UK: FCA FRN 901097; EEA: UAB Monavate, Bank of Lithuania license #92) on behalf of Kraken. It offers 0% transaction fees, 0% FX markup (Mastercard rate passed through), 0% ATM withdrawal fees from Kraken's side, 1% instant cashback in BTC, EUR, or GBP (promotional flat rate until March 31, 2026; post-promo tiered by 30-day average balance), support for 400+ cryptocurrencies, and a stainless steel Metal Card tier for users maintaining a 30-day average of £/€50,000+ across Krak, Kraken, and Kraken Pro. Available to EEA and UK residents only. UK users can access up to 3.6% APY via Krak Vaults (not available in the EEA).
The Card That Charges You Nothing
In SpendNode's 2026 review, we break down the Krak Mastercard's fee structure. Every exchange card in the market charges something. Bybit takes 0.9% conversion plus 0.5% FX. OKX takes 1.0% conversion. Bitget takes 0.9% conversion. Crypto.com Basic charges no conversion but offers 0% rewards.
The Krak Mastercard charges 0% on everything: 0% conversion, 0% FX, 0% ATM from Kraken's side. And it pays 1% cashback. Every purchase - domestic, international, online, in-store - is immediately net positive from the first transaction. No break-even threshold. No fee recovery period.
Two honest caveats: A variable spread applies when spending crypto assets (per Krak's pricing page footnote). And Krak Vaults APY is available to UK users only - not in the EEA.

Payment Network
- Network: Mastercard debit (issued by Monavate)
- Acceptance: 110M+ merchants worldwide
- Contactless: NFC tap-to-pay
- Mobile wallets: Apple Pay, Google Pay
- JIT conversion: Crypto converted to fiat at point of sale
- Supported assets: 400+ cryptocurrencies plus EUR and GBP fiat
- Primary currency: GBP (UK), EUR (EEA) - all transactions settle in your primary currency
Multi-Currency Spending
When you tap to pay, Krak spends your currencies in the priority order you set in the app. If your first currency does not cover the full amount, the app combines as many currencies as needed to complete the transaction.
Security
- Proof of Reserves: Quarterly third-party audits - Kraken was one of the first major exchanges to implement PoR
- Cold storage: Institutional-grade, majority of assets stored offline
- 2FA: Biometric and PIN authentication
- Card controls: Instant freeze/unfreeze, PIN management, asset blocking from the app
- Real-time notifications: Alerts on every transaction
- Data encryption: Enhanced security and privacy
How Spending Works: Two Flows
Fiat Spending (Truly 0%)
If you hold EUR or GBP and spend at a merchant in the same currency, the transaction is a direct debit. No conversion occurs. Kraken charges 0% and there is no spread. Your 1% cashback is pure profit.
Crypto Spending (Variable Spread)
If you spend crypto (BTC, ETH, USDT, etc.), Kraken converts it to your primary fiat currency at point of sale. Kraken charges 0% explicit conversion fee, but per their pricing page: "A variable spread will apply when spending across assets." This is the difference between the mid-market rate and the execution rate.
In practice: Fiat-to-fiat spending is genuinely zero-cost. Crypto-to-fiat spending has a small implicit cost in the conversion spread. Users who hold EUR or GBP as their primary balance can avoid this entirely.

Cashback Structure
| Detail | Value |

The 30-day average is calculated across Krak, Kraken, and Kraken Pro combined. During the current promo (until March 31, 2026), all verified users earn 1% regardless of balance.
Krak Vaults: Up to 3.6% APY (UK Only)
Krak Vaults are not available in the EEA. Per the Krak card page footnote: "APY may vary depending on market conditions. Not available in the EEA."
For UK users, Krak Vaults offer yield on deposited assets through DeFi lending strategies. This is a separate product from the card - you must actively deposit assets into a Vault to earn yield. Assets sitting in your Everyday spending balance do not automatically earn APY.
Vault Strategies
| Strategy | APY (as of Jan 2026) | Risk | Withdrawal | Operator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Balanced | Up to 3% | Lower | Near instant | Chaos Labs |
| Boosted | Up to 4% | Moderate | Near instant | Chaos Labs |
| Advanced | 8% | Highest | Within 24 hours | Sentora |
Performance Fee
Krak charges a 25% performance fee on yield earned through Vaults (30% for AutoEarn). The Krak pricing page states APYs shown exclude this fee, meaning displayed rates are gross figures.
Net yield examples after 25% performance fee:
| Strategy | Gross APY | Net APY | Annual net on £5,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balanced | 3.0% | 2.25% | £112 |
| Boosted | 4.0% | 3.0% | £150 |
| Advanced | 8.0% | 6.0% | £300 |
Vault Risks
Vaults interact with on-chain smart contracts. Risks include bugs, exploits, oracle/MEV failures, price volatility, de-pegs, liquidation, irreversible transactions, and network congestion. Kraken does not control third-party protocols. Rewards are variable and not guaranteed - you can lose some or all of your assets.
For EEA users: Krak Vaults are not available to you. Your Krak card value proposition is 0% fees + 1% cashback without yield. If you want yield alongside a card, consider Nexo (up to 16% on stablecoins, separate) or Bybit (up to 8% APR on card balance).
Salary Match: Up to 1% on Your Paycheck (Germany and Luxembourg Only)
Krak offers a salary match for verified users in Germany and Luxembourg:
- Match rate: Up to 1% of qualifying salary (promo rate until May 1, 2026; after that, tiered by 3-month average balance)
- Maximum: €250/month, €3,000/year
- Minimum salary: €2,500/month cumulative (up to 4 payroll transfers)
- Payout: Monthly in EUR or BTC
- Qualifies: Payroll transfers from an employer
- Does not qualify: P2P transfers, self-funded transfers, Krak-Kraken transfers, crypto transfers
Example: A German developer earning €5,000/month receives 1% match = €50/month = €600/year in additional value, on top of card cashback.
The Metal Card
Access
Maintain a 30-day average balance of £/€50,000 across Krak, Kraken, and Kraken Pro. This is not a lockup - assets remain fully tradable, withdrawable, and spendable. If your average drops below the threshold, you keep the physical Metal card but may lose tier benefits.
vs Crypto.com: Crypto.com's comparable tier (Icy White/Rose Gold) requires $50,000 in CRO staked for 180 days. Kraken requires the same asset level with zero lockup and full liquidity.
Metal Benefits
- 16g stainless steel card with premium design
- Maximum 1% cashback tier maintained as long as balance threshold is met
- Krak Concierge: Book travel for up to 4% boosted cashback
Krak Concierge
- Book hotels, flights, and experiences through the in-app Concierge
- Earn up to 4% cashback on Concierge-booked travel (vs 1% base)
- More merchants and perks rolling out
Value example: A $3,000 trip booked through Concierge earns $120 (4%) vs $30 at the base rate = $90 additional value per trip.
Foreign Exchange: Advertised vs Reality
Advertised: 0% FX fees.
Reality: Kraken charges 0% on their side. The Mastercard network applies its own exchange rate, which includes a small spread vs the interbank rate (typically 0.2-0.4%). This is standard for any card on any payment network.
Example: £500 purchase in London (card primary currency: EUR)
| Component | Amount |
|---|---|
| Interbank GBP/EUR rate | EUR 585.00 |
| Mastercard rate (approx. 0.3% spread) | EUR 586.76 |
| Kraken FX markup | EUR 0.00 |
| You pay | EUR 586.76 |
| Effective total markup | 0.3% |
| Cashback earned (1%) | EUR 5.87 |
| Net after cashback | EUR 580.89 (0.7% better than interbank) |
Cross-currency spending is net positive. The 1% cashback exceeds the Mastercard network spread. Traditional bank cards charge 2-3% FX on the same transaction.
Limits and Restrictions

| ATM daily limit | £/€1,000 |

What Happens If Kraken Fails?
Card Issuer Protection
The Krak Card is not issued by Kraken directly. It is issued by Monavate, a separately regulated e-money institution:
- UK: Monavate Limited, authorized by the FCA to issue e-money (FRN 901097)
- EEA: UAB Monavate, authorized by the Bank of Lithuania (license #92)
E-money regulations require fiat funds held for card payments to be segregated from the issuer's own funds. Your fiat card balance has regulatory protection separate from Kraken's solvency.
E-Money Provider
- EEA: Payward Ireland Limited (regulated by Central Bank of Ireland)
- UK: Payward Services Limited (FCA FRN 1010381)
Crypto Assets
Your crypto on Kraken is custodial. Protections include:
- Proof of Reserves: Quarterly third-party audits confirming 1:1 asset backing
- Cold storage: Institutional-grade, majority offline
- Track record: Operating since 2011, no major security breach
- Multi-jurisdiction regulation: Licensed across UK, EEA, and other markets
Important: E-money wallets are not bank accounts and are not covered by deposit guarantee schemes (FSCS in UK or national schemes in EEA). Crypto assets are unregulated and not subject to financial services compensation.
Cashback Safety
Cashback is paid in BTC, EUR, or GBP - not platform tokens. Once credited, it carries the same custodial risk as your balance. If receiving BTC cashback, consider withdrawing to self-custody periodically.
Risk Comparison
| Card | Fund Protection | Transparency |
|---|---|---|
| Krak Mastercard | Monavate e-money segregation + Kraken quarterly PoR | Highest among exchange cards |
| Bybit Card | Exchange custody, no published PoR | Lower transparency |
| Crypto.com | E-money segregation, $750M insurance | Strong insurance |
| Gnosis Pay | Self-custody Safe wallet | Zero custodial risk |
| Plutus | Fiat in FCA-regulated Modulr | Strong regulatory framework |
Real User Scenarios
Scenario 1: Sophie (London Freelancer, UK - £2,500/month spending)
Setup:
- Krak card (plastic, black). UK resident
- Holds GBP and USDC in Krak
- £5,000 in Krak Vault (Boosted strategy)
- Cashback in BTC
- 70% domestic GBP, 30% international EUR
Results after 12 months:
- Domestic spending (£21,000): £210 cashback (1%)
- International spending (£9,000): approx. £54 cashback net (0.6% after Mastercard spread)
- Vault yield on £5,000 at 3% net (after 25% fee on 4% gross): £150
- Total annual value: £414 (approx. $520)
Her verdict: "I switched from Revolut Metal (£13.99/month) which gave 1% cashback but charged for crypto conversion. I cancelled Revolut and saved £168/year in subscriptions. The Vault yield is a bonus. BTC cashback means my rewards track Bitcoin."
Scenario 2: Lukas (Berlin Developer, EEA - €3,500/month spending)
Setup:
- Krak card (plastic, orange). German resident
- Salary of €5,000/month deposited to Krak (Salary Match eligible)
- Holds EUR and BTC. Cashback in EUR
- 80% domestic EUR, 20% international
- No Krak Vaults (not available in EEA)
Results after 12 months:
- Domestic spending (€33,600): €336 cashback (1%)
- International spending (€8,400): approx. €50 cashback net (0.6% after Mastercard spread)
- Salary Match (1% promo rate): €50/month = €600/year (rate may change after May 1, 2026)
- Vaults APY: €0 (not available in EEA)
- Card-only value: €386. With Salary Match: approx. €986
His verdict: "No APY stung at first. But the Salary Match more than compensates in Germany - €600/year on top of €386 in cashback. The zero fees are genuine. I verified by checking my Mastercard statements against the interbank rate."
EEA reality check: Without Salary Match (outside Germany/Luxembourg), the card-only value is €386/year. Still strong for a free zero-fee card, but the gap versus UK users who get Vaults APY is real. Kraken's marketing does not make this distinction clear.
Scenario 3: Andreas (Amsterdam Entrepreneur, EEA - €8,000/month, Metal tier)
Setup:
- Krak Metal Card (€55,000 in Kraken assets, not locked)
- Uses Krak Concierge for business travel (approx. €2,000/month)
- Cashback in EUR
- Primarily EUR domestic, quarterly trips to UK and US
- No Krak Vaults (not available in EEA)
Results after 12 months:
- Non-travel spending (€72,000): €720 cashback (1%)
- Travel via Concierge (€24,000): €960 cashback (4%)
- Vaults APY: €0 (not available in EEA)
- Total annual value: €1,680
His verdict: "The Concierge 4% on travel is the differentiator. Without APY, the Metal tier is harder to justify on pure economics compared to UK users. But the €55K is not locked - I can withdraw tomorrow, unlike Crypto.com which locks your stake. The Concierge earns €720 extra over the base rate on my travel. That is the math that matters."
UK comparison: A UK Metal user with the same profile would add approx. £1,500/year in Vault yield (3% net on £50K Boosted), bringing total to approx. €3,180. The UK advantage is significant at higher balances.
How the Krak Mastercard Compares
For EEA Users (No Vaults)
- Bybit Card: 2% rewards but 0.9% conversion + 0.5% FX. Higher raw rate, lower net after fees. Bybit offers 8% APR on card balance which EEA Kraken users cannot match
- Crypto.com Basic: 0% rewards, 0% FX. Strictly inferior - no cashback, no yield
- Gnosis Pay: 0% fees, up to 5% in GNO with staking. Self-custodial. Higher potential reward but requires GNO staking and Gnosis Chain familiarity
- Plutus: 3-9% with PLU staking, but 2.5% FX on non-GBP/EUR and spend caps
EEA verdict: Kraken wins on simplicity and zero fees. Users wanting higher returns need staking (Gnosis, Plutus) or accept fee complexity (Bybit). Bybit is the stronger competitor for EEA users who want yield without staking.
For UK Users (Full Vaults Access)
- Bybit Card: 2% cashback minus fees, plus 8% APR on balance. Competitive total value but more complex. Bybit's higher APR can offset fee drag at higher balances
- Plutus: 3-9% with staking, UK-native, GBP domestic. Higher reward ceiling for perk optimizers
- Nexo Card: 2% cashback, up to 16% yield on assets (separate product), 0.5% non-NEXO FX. Higher yield potential, different trade-offs
UK verdict: Kraken offers the simplest path to positive returns with Vault yield on top. Users willing to optimize can earn more with Plutus or Nexo, but Kraken requires zero effort or strategy.
Is the Krak Mastercard Worth It in 2026?
Use the Krak Mastercard if:
- You are in the EEA or UK and want a zero-fee card with guaranteed positive return on every purchase
- You value transparency - quarterly Proof of Reserves and 14+ year track record
- You want simplicity: no staking, no subscriptions, no token economics to learn
- (UK) You want to combine zero-fee spending with up to 3.6% APY via Krak Vaults
- (Germany/Luxembourg) You want to earn up to 1% salary match on your paycheck
Skip the Krak Mastercard if:
- You want the highest possible reward rate. Kraken's 1% is honest but modest. Plutus offers up to 9%, Crypto.com Private offers 4% uncapped
- You want self-custody. Gnosis Pay or Ready offer self-custodial spending
- You are outside the EEA/UK. Consider Bybit (global), Coinbase (US), or RedotPay (global)
- (EEA) You want yield on your balance. Krak Vaults are not available in the EEA. Consider Nexo or Bybit for yield
Final verdict: The Krak Mastercard is the most transparent crypto card in Europe. In a market where competitors hide fees in spreads, conversions, and token mechanics, Kraken charges nothing and pays 1% back instantly. For UK users, Krak Vaults add up to 3.6% APY (net 2.25-6% after performance fee) on top of card rewards, making it one of the strongest combined propositions in the market. For EEA users, the card is excellent on fees and cashback, but the absence of Vaults narrows the total value - a distinction Kraken's own marketing does not emphasize. The Metal tier with Concierge travel perks (4% on travel) adds meaningful value for high spenders willing to maintain £/€50K in assets with zero lockup. For European crypto holders who want reliable, zero-fee spending backed by the most audited exchange in the industry, the Krak card is the default choice.
