Solana validators have been urged to address a Linux kernel vulnerability while Ubuntu’s repair remains pending. CryptoSlate’s November 2 report flagged the unresolved fix for Ubuntu’s main 24.04 kernel, leaving affected operators dependent on temporary mitigations. Canonical’s security tracker and an AWS bulletin confirm the underlying vulnerability, CVE-2026-98432, and the need for host-level remediation.
The warning concerns the operating system beneath validator software. It does not report a confirmed Solana network exploit or stolen user funds.
Ubuntu’s Pending Package Leaves an Operational Gap
As of November 2, 2026, Ubuntu’s tracker, last updated October 30, classified the vulnerability as high priority and listed affected kernel packages with repairs still in progress. An upstream Linux correction exists; Ubuntu operators still need a corrected distribution package to install and run on their production validators.
Ubuntu’s tracker records a CVSS 3.1 score of 9.8, classified as critical. It also presents a CVSS 4.0 score of 8.3, classified as high. Those figures measure severity under different scoring frameworks. Neither estimates losses or the percentage of machines exposed.
For validator operators, the practical question is which kernel package is installed and whether that package contains the correction. A distribution name alone is too broad to answer it.
Crafted Connections Can Reach the Host Kernel
AWS describes a memory issue in the Linux kernel’s IPv4 TCP handshake path affecting kernel versions 4.4 and later. Under specific conditions, a remote attacker without authentication can send crafted packets to an affected listener and achieve remote code execution.
The handshake is the connection setup process. Because the vulnerable code runs in the kernel, updating the validator application alone would leave the underlying defect untouched. The vulnerability could affect validator availability, and remediation belongs at the operating system layer. It requires no change to Solana’s transaction rules or emergency token economics proposal.
AWS already lists corrected packages for Amazon Linux 2 and Amazon Linux 2023 and instructs customers to update and reboot. With Ubuntu packages still pending, operators’ remediation options depend on their distribution.
Traffic Filtering Buys Time, With Limits
Red Hat’s advisory describes an nftables mitigation that drops incoming IPv4 TCP packets containing IP options. It says the filter reduces exposure but cannot fully prevent exploitation. The memory error remains until the kernel is corrected.
Ordinary TCP options are carried in a different header and remain permitted by that rule. Filtering can still disrupt necessary workloads, so Red Hat tells administrators to review their traffic requirements and test the change before production deployment. Operators using the filter while awaiting a corrected package must account for their own servers’ traffic needs.
Overview
Solana validators face a Linux host vulnerability that permits remote code execution under specific conditions. Ubuntu’s main 24.04 kernel fix remains pending, and temporary traffic filtering offers limited protection. Complete remediation requires installing a corrected kernel and rebooting into it.
